Objectives:
Sneaker Objective
You will be designing and creating your own sneaker and packaging. Your sneaker will be based on the research of sneakers both from the past and what’s happening now with new tech and design features. We will discuss how sneakers and sneaker culture have changed how we think of sneakers and that they now may even be considered fine art. You will be generating ideas using several creative concepting methods.
From your creative concepting ideas, you will then generate at least 15 - 20 sneaker concepts and/or variations using thumbnail sketches. From your thumbnail sketches, choose a design direction and begin refining your design. You will be expected to experiment with color choices, design aesthetics, art history, and new tech as you finalize your sneaker design.
You will need to construct, paint, build, or print your actual design. How you do that is entirely up to you. You can sculpt it out of cardboard, paper mâché, fabric, leather, or 3D print part or all of your shoe. You can also, but it is not and I repeat, not mandatory for you to buy a shoe as a blank canvas to paint or deconstruct then reassembled, that is entirely up to you and your parents. If you do decide to buy a sneaker, you need to put in a significant amount of work to redesign and fully change the look and feel of the shoe.
Fabric Screen Printing Objective
You will need to screenprint on something fabric. It could be on a shirt, tote bag, sneaker bag, just something on fabric. It needs to be a cohesive part of the branding and package design. The print needs to be at least one color, but I will encourage you to entertain the idea of a multicolor print.
Packaging Objective
You’ll also be for creating packaging/shoebox for your sneaker. You will need to think about the typography, color, logo placement and form as well as materials, construction, durability, and how the finished work will be seen in its final context on a store shelf.
Your packaging will be both a functional (capable of holding your item) and an aesthetically considered design. It also must be physically constructed – you have to make it for real! You can fake materials if necessary, but an effort should be made to use real materials whenever possible.
