Singapore MRT & LRT Network Diagram (November 2021)

This is my November 2021 version of the Singapore MRT & LRT network diagram, including planned extensions for the next couple of decades.  A homage to one of my favourite cities in the world, with impressive town planning, awesome food, architectural wonders, and of course, an enviable public transport system centered around this dense network of high to medium capacity metro lines.

My first attempt at drawing the Singapore network was all the way back in 2012, when I was still using Microsoft Visio.  My design aesthetics were markedly different back then.  Rather than go on at length, here is a comparison so you can see for yourself:
There are some design elements I carried over from my 2012 version of the diagram for continuity, including the overall shape of the network, with the Circle Line featuring as a prominent visual hook.  A stylised Merlion with a jet of tropical water is another common design element that fills up some of empty space towards the top two corners of the diagram.

In terms of aesthetics, my 2021 approach is to go for a cleaner, more minimalist look, with less shading, and a simple, understated coastline.  Fonts are also lighter.  Colours are more vibrant.

While the overall shape of the network remains the same, I had to redesign the diagram largely from the ground up to accommodate some significant network extensions that were not subject to detailed planning back in 2012, including:
- The East Coast section of the Thomson-East Coast Line;
- The Jurong Region Line;
- The Cross Region Line; and
- The final stage of the Circle Line between HarbourFront and Marina Bay

Here are some closeups:

The 2021 version has smaller text (yes, not as readable), but this is for the sake of the including the station names in the other recognized languages of Singapore, which to my mind adds more local character.  (For those looking closely at the Tamil text, apologies that not all characters are displaying properly.  If someone has guidance for me on a good Tamil font set compatible with Affinity Designer, let me know.)

The 2021 version is also relatively less compact.

I have included more logos to show more transport connections.  And given Singapore has moved to a system that allows for time-based transfers, I have added more out-of-station transfers that may save quite a bit of time.

It is a testament to Singapore's consistent rail-centric development strategy that within the space of a decade, there is so much more to put on the map.  Here is the north-eastern end of town.

Unlike the 2012 network, the 2021 version shows the Light Rail network in full on the main map, so everything can be found in one place.  Again, makes the text rather small, especially when we incorporate the station names in multiple languages.  Not the best decision from a design perspective, but I went with it anyway.

I hope you enjoy.  Welcome feedback as always.  You can drop me a note via Behance, or send me a message via itsbernie81@gmail.com
