Home (Place Identity)

Home (Place Identity)
This project “Home (Place Identity)” aims to explore the concept of place identity by drawing visual references from my own home, in order to understand the spaces I reside in. The concept links interior and exterior spaces of my house to their respective identifying factors including memories, feelings, emotions experienced by the self over time, shaping its perceived identity. Built in 1969, “Kashana-e-Shaukat” named after the central family figure, my grandmother Shaukat, has housed 3 generations of my family. During the documentation process, I was able to recognize moods unique to each room. I categorized these moods into 3 types of associations: Childhood memories, A Person and the House, itself. The route chosen to commemorate and document these associations are both direct and abstract, translated into a collection of quilts, meant to blur the line between utilitarian and decorative purposes. The visuals and techniques in the collection have been used to induce nostalgia by allowing the audience to draw into their own personal experiences and resonate with my project.
A very brief process is shown in the project below.
The Research Boards are mainly based off of the interior and exterior spaces within the Home. A lot of theory-based research surrounding the concept of Place Identity and its relation with the Self was also conducted.
Multiple styles and techniques were used to extract drawings and concepts from within the boards, keeping in mind the emotional, memory-based and personal perspectives. Below are some of the many drawings created.
Exploration through some samples. Some also made use of magnets which would ultimately be incorporated in one of the final outcomes.
The Final Outcomes consisted of three quilts: Memory based (which made use of magnets, and acts as an interactive wall quilt). It made use of hand embroidered pieces, some of which had magnets attached to the back, while others were appliqued onto the base of the quilt. Other techniques used include: machine embroidery, patching, quilting, hand painting and screen printing.
A Person Based quilted throw, created after the living space of my grandmother, who was the pioneer of this house. It's unique in terms of its exploration of spaces as well as its horizontal alignment. The gold fabric at the borders was created using gold foil, while the base of the quilt was screen printed. Other techniques include: machine embroidery, hand embroidery, hand painting, digital printing, patching, applique, screen printing and sewing.
The final quilt is House based, consisting of composed areas of the old and new blueprints, combined with techniques such as Kantha, patchwork, hand painting, dyeing and screen printing to create a narrow, vertical throw.
