Hong Kong & Shenzhen Railway Network Diagram (Nov 2021)

This is the November 2021 version of my combined Hong Kong MTR Railway Network and Shenzhen Metro Network diagram.  It is an update from the original version of the diagram that I published in July 2016.

You can see the July 2016 version of the diagram here:

This is a future state diagram.  It is not a diagram of the current network as of 2021.  The diagram captures:
- MTR projects that are under construction or for which announcements have been made with enough information about the planned route;
- MTR projects that are drawn from my own ideas;
- My own ideas about how the MTR network should be presented;
- Shenzhen Metro projects that are under construction and/or planning in the near-to-medium term.

I should call out that there is an amount of information assymetry between what goes into the Hong Kong portion of the diagram and what goes into the Shenzhen portion.  Being a Hongkonger, I just know a lot more about the MTR and the our city - enough to propose some ideas of my own.  So what you see is a projection of Hong Kong's network far into the future (probably the 2040s).  On the other hand, things in Shenzhen are a bit foreign to me, so I need to rely on what information I can find online.  Further, the breakneck pace of Shenzhen Metro's growth - and the fact a lot of lines to be commissioned in the medium term appear to not have been fully planned - means that I only have information about what is happening in the near future.  What you are seeing is the Shenzhen Metro network sometime between 2025~2030.

I should also add that some of the ideas around the Northern Metropolis strategy are controversial and for now, looks very much like a bunch of bureaucrats connecting a few dots around the new development areas and saying "voila, we have a new train line", without really thinking through as to whether it is a workable solution.  The map depicts the suggested route but I suspect that it will change after detailed planning is done.  I will share more details below.
