We Are Not Perfect
The inspiration behind this art piece came from a MasterClass with Jeff Koons. In his class, he spoke about the purpose of a gazing ball, which is meant to reflect the viewer as he/she experiences the surroundings. I thought that that was rather ingenious because the reflection actually allows the viewer to be an active participant in the art, rather than be a passive one. Other artists, such as Alex Calder and Donald Judd, have made interactive art as well, such as giant wind mobiles (Calder) and the the reflective, rectangular blocks that attach to walls (Judd). Hence, I was determined to create my own interactive piece, but instead of making mine three-dimensional, I decided that mine would utilize the aesthetics of typography.

The quote that I chose was adapted from a Kanye West lyric (“You’re not perfect, but you’re not your mistakes.”), and the intended audience would be people experiencing rehabilitation—but honestly, the words apply to us all.

I truly feel that art has the power to help people meditate and imagine a better version of themselves. With this reflective, rose gold foil and these optimistic words, set and debossed in Trajan font, I am hoping that the viewer believes in his/his potential as much as I truly do.
