This community center fills the site on the Northeast corner of 17th and Tasker Streets, the site of the recently abandoned George W. Childs Elementary School.  Because education is viewed as opportunistic, it is associated with lightness in this project.  The metal ribbons which wrap the exterior of the building are oriented to control the amount and quality of light reaching the spaces inside, particularly the educational spaces on the upper floor.  The educational core locks together all the programmatic elements, while an urban farm is barely visible below as the heart of the project and neighborhood.  The marketplace and bike hub are most easily accessbile to the public, sitting at ground level on opposite ends of the site.  Together, the programmatic elements provide the neighborhood of Newbold, Philadelphia with healthy food and an alternative method for transportation while teaching vocational skills which give individuals the chance to educate themselves and improving their future.
