'No Effort'

This period, we had a long term project where we had to create our own arcade game, from concept art to coding. Here is the progress of our game 'No Effort'.

Brainstorm

For this project we thought of different concepts to choose one final one. A few of the concepts we thought of were for example:

- A competitive game where the screen gets smaller while you play. Once you have survived till the smallest screen you win
- Competitive game where you get multiple rounds with each round a different game, once you beat all the little games you win.
- The ball in the middle controls a ball on the screen(like a football for example) and you have to try to score in the goal of the other player, the buttons can spawn objects. You need 2 players for this and since you only have one ball in the middle you can push each other aside to score.
- Google dinosaur game/a parkour game, but you race against the other player in split screen. On checkpoints you will have boss fights, and after each boss you will start a new level

No effort concept

A simple competitive game where 2 players play in 1 field to avoid multiple flying objects that vary in size and how fast they fly, the longer the game continues the more object will spawn. players can also bump against each other to push each other away. Both players start with 3 lives, the player that loses all 2 lives first loses.

Game mechanics

- Joystick: Movement
- Green button: Dash
- Knockback if you bump against each other
- You lose a life if you touch one of the flying objects or the wall
- You start with 3 lives

After some sketches were made everyone in the team could vote on the ones they liked the most and the ones with the most votes were going to be continued to get used in the project.

There are other colours for the players as well, but red and blue were the first ones.

The starting screen we chose:

Logo designs by Laura:

For the cover icon we also made different designs, the final one is the one in the top right (also seen in the beginning), we chose this one because we think it mostly shows some of our game aspects.

Prototype 2 test
The feedback we got from the teacher for our second prototype:

"Bring more life in the game, make more animated lines like the lines from the players. Make it more visible when a player loses a life. Add music and sound effects. Power-ups not on the top of the screen but in the playfield, and add knockback to the players."

In the feedback they also said to screen record the gameplay which we did as you can see in the video above!

Testing on the arcade screen
Some things we still need to add after testing the game are the ability to escape out of the game, using the game controls to select things instead of the cursor and keyboard and adding the credit screen when you decide to exit the game.

Laura made the escape button:

The finished game:

Group evaluation
We liked working in a group with different people from different studies and learned a lot from this experience, for example, how team-projects like these get made in the world of game companies. We also learned so much from the project itself and are happy with the outcome. The only thing we need to keep in mind for next time is having better communication, but overall it went well!

Thank you for watching!
