We know that "measuring" has a universally accepted definition, but I'm not sure what kinds of things are measurable or what conditions make measurement possible. Why is it so limited, and materials can only be counted? Why not emotions or ideas?
Measurements can sometimes give a purpose. For example, a 20mm thick wooden board is thick enough for a table, and bricks of the same exact measurements erect walls more quickly than ones with varying dimensions. It can also be used to describe something, such as a 6-inch smartphone that fits in our pockets and is hence called portable. When a room is large, we refer to it as roomy or spacious. Also worth noting is the fact that architects employ measures to communicate with builders or other architects to converse spatially.
This system is quite useful. Most crucially, though, this method has been built. As a result, it hasn't changed in a very long time. I believe it began when trading was first brought into the world. People's demand for a better, "fixed-value" medium increased. Is the measurement the result of people's avarice? If not, then from where did the idea of measurements come from?
