The Gold Standard

"The Gold Standard" was a short bumper piece I created for my church, an introduction to the Biblical relevancy of gold mentioned in scripture. This was again, one of the many intense but short and sweet projects that had a tight deadline and ambitious technical challenges I had to figure out.

Rendered in Redshift, the majority of the piece is your typical "throw it in Octane with gold" look, which was a plus for time's sake and the many short scenes that had to be created. However I really wanted the ending to be a complex and impactful resolution into the final sermon series graphics that was intended to match. And so in terms of late nights, a lot of previz, and rendering, the ending gold bar scene is the hero of the piece.

Some nice big stills from the ending.

But to start, the very intro is actually built using the same systems as the end, which was also a fairly complicated build. Still learning my way around X Particles, I found it quicker to use C4Ds volume builder to create the liquid gold pour the emanates text into existence - and then of course complemented with some XP Flow Field seen below but later reversed.

Then gradually lowering the voxel size after some testing to get as clean of volume geometry as possible with render times.

Some of the other minor scenes.

As stated, the final scene would require some extra eye catching complexity concluding into a lengthy and grand build of flowing gold and particles, as well as troubleshooting some displacement animation for the ending text that gets etched into the bar itself.

Booleans for example,

Applying the same volume system underneath,

A more inside look as to how there are actually two volumes of varying density at work. You may also notice some strange stutter artifact in the volume that gives a strobing effect - had to alleviate this in post per some frame blending tricks. So, volume mesher isn't perfect necessarily without its pitfalls.

Lastly, there was some troubleshooting to be done on the title that writes itself into the gold bar. The boole also did some weird things to displacement, as well as trying to figure a proper grey value PNG sequence that wrote the words on nicely and a higher resolution without MIP scale blurring. Ended up being ideal to just delay displacement transition until boole had passed.

Concluding with the final composited result.
