Chains Character redesign concept test
This is a test for concept artist role where they ask me to redesign Chains from Payday.
This is my vision: Chains is now 40-45 years old and the time leaves marks on his body like wrinkles, spots on the skin,
and gray hair. But his adrenaline junkie personality has left him the most striking scars.
With 40 years old and a strong personality, addicted to action, and with some military discipline,
I think that the mohawk haircut sends a direct message of what kind of person he is.
Based on the references in the brief I’ve made a research for military or tactical, always with an elegant
touch for clothing. I didn’t want a standard uniform, outfits have to give information about personality and
in this case, we can perceive that Chains is a grown up man and he has good taste.
With these references, I’ve created different designs to see how they fit with the color palette of the
brief. As you could take a look at the images below, I’ve created several designs. Never shutting doors
too soon for creativity.
Once I have chosen the ideas that work best for my characters redesign, I’ve created the pose
in 3D to check if it is dynamic and if it really works well for what I’m looking for.
With that pose, I’ve done the pattern construction and simulation on Marvelous Designer
to have a more realistic approach and add some natural wrinkles to it. I’ve made a lighting set
in Blender, always thinking that the whole design is understood.
I’ve finished the designs with the final render, giving it more details. As the face is almost 80% of a character design I’ve put so much attention on it.
