...Like Bees to Honey.

Spring 2009 Window Display
When it comes to spring window display ideas, generally the first things that come to mind are flowers, butterflies, birds etc.... cutesy things that over the years have become a bit cliché. So for my Spring 2009 windows at Mikimoto New York, I wanted to create something that communicated the idea that spring had arrived but in an unconventional way. To me, bees are the true indicator that spring is upon us. The precursor to flowers blooming is in fact their pollination by bees.

I commissioned life-like bees from a company based in California that specializes in replicas of insects for television and film. The honeycomb vitrine backdrops were created from sheets of plastic and the pools of honey were created using hot glue. For a splash of color I added a three-paneled translucent vinyl print of a lavender flower just above the towers.

My intention was to draw customers in to the vitrines (like bees to honey) through intrigue.

"Are those real bees?" they'd wonder, "Maybe I should take a closer look..."
