The MUJI Shopping Experience

Project Brief

This project is a concept redesign of the shopping experience at a MUJI Outlet.

MUJI is a Japanese retail company which sells a wide variety of household and consumer goods. Muji's design philosophy is minimalist, and it places an emphasis on recycling, reducing production and packaging waste, and a no-logo or "no-brand" policy.

This project composes of finding out specific problems user faces which hinders their shopping experience at that particular MUJI outlet, and coming up with a feasible solution for it. The primary focus of the project is on the users and usability.

A new shopping experience was created for the new age of consumers, covering their needs and wants.

Research Insights

Young adults prefer looking for the products on their own instead of approaching staff despite the wide range of products being hard to locate in the store.

MUJI retail staff handle customers well on a normal basis, but are unable to cope when the store is crowded.

Fitting Rooms/Seats are crucial for young adults when purchasing apparels as they want to try them on before making the decision.

Wayfinding in store is bad as customers are unable to find the products they want with ease.

With good customer service, young adults would generally be pleased with the shopping experience.

Problem Statement

Customers of MUJI @ Tampines 1 rely on retail staff a lot when shopping due to the lack of wayfinding and inaccessibility to certain products that are out of reach. Produce a solution that will cater to MUJI’s extensive range of products and allow customers to acquire/look for desired products efficiently and independently.
