Wall paint on Wood Panel
This painting is about the juxtaposition between light and dark. Peace and destruction. Chaos and order. With the destruction in the background, it is contrasted with the person casually posing with a gas mask in the foreground as if everything is normal. The bright colours of the plants and outfit stray away from the darkness in the surroundings, creating a curious visual contrast.
Process
The background was more loosely painted, with some of the wood showing through, to show a rougher and chaotic scene. Initially I painted a pinkish outfit for the person but there wasn't enough contrast and didn't feel impactful enough, so I eventually made it brighter and whiter which turned out much better. Similarly, I added a pop of brighter colours to the plants and it created not only a colour contrast, but also a statement of nature versus human impact on the environment.
