The illusion of space

By: NGAI Tsz Hing, Aigner | Tutor: Gerhard Bruyns
M. C. Escher (June 17, 1898 - March 27, 1972) is world-famous for his visual puzzles that explored impossible worlds. Escher can always materialize his observations of reality expression his fantasies quickly.

His drawings express manipulations of space, time and perspective, and rearranged them according to his sense of logic. The Eschering worlds’ ideas are based on reintroducing the architectural representation of imaginary views. Can the perspective hinge the starting point for the metaphoric imagination? How can optical illusion deliver methodology of understanding spatial complexity?

This project deconstructed Escher’s artwork in threedimensional ways and uses his drawing as a medium for a better understanding of spatial complexity. At the beginning, this project demonstrates a different illusion created by Escher to discuss a complex distorted system. Thereafter the project develops a methodology of analysis and drawing to create another three- dimensional immersive spatial environment.
