Ridding Yourself of Hatred

For more than four decades, L. Jay Mitchell has been helping adolescents through the many successful residential programs he founded. The founder of Greenbrier Academy for Girls, L. Jay Mitchell is also the author of “Decide Now; The Good Life or the Best Life.” In it, he shows the importance of freeing oneself from hatred and other negative emotions.

Hatred is a part of the rage. When it takes over, it destroys a person’s concentration and ruins their ability to act with dignity. However, ridding your life of hatred leads to a happy life with unselfish love for others.

This process of getting rid of hatred starts with detaching from the idea that you deserve something in return for what you do. While learning this takes time, you will notice that doing things without expectations becomes easier over time. Recognize that the only thing you can control is yourself; you cannot change another person, no matter what you do. Instead, evaluate the way they are and decide whether you accept them or not. Don’t hate them for being who they are.

It’s also essential that you analyze your inner self. Hatred comes from within you and is the result of how you respond to certain things. Don’t hold grudges against people for doing what is in their nature. Rather, forgive and forget them. You may lose people in your life during this process, but learning to tolerate other people is key for ridding yourself of hatred. Focus on what you can do in certain situations instead of hating that another person isn’t changing.
