These works were created for my MFA thesis exhibtion, Sensual Metamorphosis. In Elan Vital and L’Amour Fou I am drawing from the ideas of feminine sexual power and creation. In Elan Vital legs and arms are repeated and intertwined with wavy bits of hair creating a harmonious undulation of female bodies swirling and whirling around, growing out of one another and reaching out, spreading their life and power. The female body parts are meant to create a sensual dance in celebration of creativity and life. L’Amour Fou depicts sexuality and pleasure in all its glory, playfulness, and beauty. The central nude figure is surrounded by many arms, which radiate concentrically from her body, as if she is reaching up and out. This composition is reminiscent of multi-armed Hindu goddesses, like Shakti, the personified concept of feminine creative power and primordial cosmic energy. The multiple arms convey the immense power, pleasure and sensuality of the central figure materialized and flowing through the scene. The body is surrounded by a luscious bounty of seeds, almost messy and scattered. Her unruly dark locks of hair float and swirl wildly as if caught in a breeze. A system of roots grows out of her back connecting her with the earth, as she is lifting up to the sky as in a transcendent experience.The works aren’t meant to depict realistic bodies in realistic space, instead they convey intense emotion, and are symbolic of corporeal and mental experiences. By reclaiming these parts and recontextualizing them I wish to equate femininity with a powerful force of creation and sexuality independent of the desire of others.
