About
This is an editorial design project that included typesetting and making a complete book; an exercise in using complex typographic arrangements, making an applying a design system consistently.
The cover features:
Spot UV and spot colour
A red spine to add a pop of colour
A white space heavy, minimalist layout
Subtle hints towards the book content by mixing up a stencil and a regular sans-serif typefaces in the logotype
A design system for the cover
Sophistication of an academic book, complete with balanced visuals
The inside pages
A grid-based flexible design system
Contextually based decisions
A mix of modern sans-serifs and serifs, keeping it within the genre conventions but with a fresh twist
Light typesetting with minimal distractions from reading
Close attention to how the images are presented on every page
The making
This is a process of making a book dummy.
It is ideal for troubleshooting, getting hands-on with the designs, and getting a lot more experience with the printing process. This makes the outcome so much more customisable.
The materials
This project involved the exploration of materials, including:
Cardstock types
Paper types and weights
Binding options and the materials used for binding (glue, stitching etc.)
