Month Charity Stream Highlights Female Playwrights

A member of the Dramatists Guild, Cathy Earnest is a Chicago-based playwright whose productions have garnered her multiple honors. Among other short plays, Cathy Earnest wrote The River, which premiered at a 2014 showcase by the playwright-development center Chicago Dramatists. A reading of the one-act play appeared on the Women’s History Month charity stream by Between Us Productions in March 2021.

Held in honor of Women’s History Month, the stream featured readings and Zoom-based presentations of diverse theatrical works from female playwrights. The lineup included the musical I Can’t Wait for Next June, a reading of a portion of the screenplay for A Sleep, and two short plays including The River. Using lakes and rivers as a metaphor for one’s path in life, The River features two adolescents who discuss the merits of lakes and rivers and how saving someone can go beyond a literal sense.

Between Us Productions co-artistic directors Jasmine Brown and Samantha Lee Manas hosted the near-two-hour charity stream, which benefited Black Girls CODE. The nonprofit uses workshops and school programs to introduce young girls from underrepresented communities to coding and programming lessons and to empower them to pursue careers in technology. Furthermore, it focuses on increasing the number of women of color in this sector and filling the gap in access to digital technology for underprivileged communities.

An organization dedicated to exploring socio-political issues through compelling theater by emerging and new artists, Between Us Productions selected Black Girls CODE as the beneficiary of its stream in part due to the lack of female representation in the technology sector.
