"The Little Mermaid" is a fairy tale by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen about a young mermaid willing to give up her life in the sea and her identity as a mermaid to gain a human soul and the love of a human prince.

 

The book cover was created with the intend to play with the idea of pattern design, but with a twist. The plot of the story is hinted with a pair of human legs swimming in a sea of mermaid tails, created in the form of a repetitive pattern. This symbolizes the princess leaving behind her mermaid kingdom, to becoming a human, as she breaks away from the norm of her underwater society. The pair of huamn legs then breaks the repetitiveness of the pattern.
