Student Artwork Gallery: HKUST In My Eyes
Art Program organizing committee members organized the CamerART Campaign in Spring 2021 aiming to collect artworks from HKUST students. Selected photographs, paintings and sketches were displayed in this platform to show how students view, experience, and adjust to university life through their eyes.

We appreciate all the student artists to share their artistic endeavors with us. Special thanks to Art Program Team who discover students’ potential and helps to develop their creative talents.

If you want to share your artworks to this platform, please contact Michelle Ma at

[HKUST In My Eyes]
"I love taking the same frame photos but at different times. The yellow flowers were so beautiful that they captured my eyes. I loved the tree because it had no leaves but so many beautiful yellow flowers. A few weeks after taking that photo, I noticed that the tree had a different beauty. I thought it could be another nice photo with the same old frame.
For the library photos, I think the HKUST library is really beautiful and a photographer can find interesting geometry there. I think if I had more time during my busy PhD life, I could take more photos there."

[With My Yellow Tracksuit] (Left)[Friday Lunch with Avocado Sesame Wrap] (Middle)[Rise] (Right) - all digital paintings
[With My Yellow Tracksuit] (Left):
As the sun was setting, the concourse was spatial and elaborate, and I was heading towards the bus. Thinking about 931 King's Oolong Tea Latte, I almost wanted to swing myself around.

[Friday Lunch with Avocado Sesame Wrap] (Middle): I found myself an outdoor seat in UST. People around were chattering, and there was a moment when I felt myself back into 18th century France. Professor was just describing to us about the Enlightenment that morning; then carrying my Apple Pencil, precisely I became part of the public sphere in the coffee house.

[Rise] (Right)The symbolic sundial in HKUST always leave me an impression of a dynamic flare, with its fearless upward momentum, looking as if a spontaneous dancer. When I peek into her sacred eyes, there is the creation of knowledge. Like any other art forms, she embraces her own aesthetics; she left her mark on us like a muscle memory, and eventually fuses into pieces of who we are.

[Atrium] - coffee painting
"This painting was done using coffee, a new technique I learnt in a workshop conducted by one of the clubs at HKUST. Although I am not a huge fan of drinking coffee, I really wanted to try something out of my comfort zone and decided to paint the Atrium at HKUST using this medium. I love the structures on the roof of this area and the Mushroom is one of my favorite spots on campus, so this was an interesting location to paint."

[HKUST in my distracted mind] - digital painting
"It occurred to me when I was preparing my submission for “HKUST in my eyes” that I spend a significant amount of time daydreaming. When I’m tired of research, bored in class, or feeling otherwise uninspired, my mind wanders. I made this painting to represent some of the directions that my daydreams take. Are there massive deep sea creatures whose size and appearance we can’t even fathom? Who knows! I also appreciate the fact that our imagination can make completely mundane situations meaningful and entertaining. As someone who has struggled with attention problems all my life, I believe my imagination is my saving grace, and that it has made me a more creative and unique person. I hope anyone who has a similar problem can likewise find a way to get the most out of their wandering mind."

"The RedBird is the landmark of HKUST. Commissioned by the Hong Long Jockey Club, it stands for qualities of accuracy, precision and metaphorically highlights elements of freedom and diversity. Peacocks are the national bird of India and their wings and tails are renowned for their beauty worldwide. They are also the inspiration for the many folklores as they represent grace, pride, and joy for all who see them. I decided to paint a peacock to portray HKUST’s emphasis on the diversity it offers, as students flock in from all over the world to study at this renowned university. The painting of the peacock and the Red Bird both symbolize freedom. Freedom to make our own choices as an adult, with no structured routine, no deadlines, no curfews, and while it may not seem like much, there is a shared understanding between all teenagers and young adults how important and vital this freedom is to our personal growth. This is reminiscent of the Red Bird which acts as a symbol to all the aspiring students to achieve freedom in HKUST, which provides opportunities like no other. Freedom is a complex subject with entire novels dedicated to exploring the innate human instinct to act without constraint. Therefore, HKUST, in my eyes, offers me the freedom to come into this world as an accomplished young adult."
