Sogemi Ortomercato: Wholesale Market, Milan

Sogemi Ortomercato: Vegetable Wholesale Market, Milan
Architectural Design Studio, Politecnico di Milano
The Wholesale Fruit and Vegetable Market in Milan is the largest in Italy in terms of quantity of products sold (over 1,000,000 tons/year); it is characterized by the range of products available throughout the year and represents a concentration of the variety of fruit and vegetable products.

The geographical position in the center of Northern Italy at the main international transit corridor, as well as the quality products provided here ensure the Milanese market leadership in the distribution of fruit and vegetable products in Italy and in other European countries.

Export: 300,000 tons of fruits and vegetables marketed each year by wholesalers
Import: 33% of total-marketed fruit and vegetables each year
Case Study 1: FICO Eataly World, Bologna, Italy
Case Study 2: Vegetable Wholesale Market, Cheung Sha Wan, Hong Kong

1 public park   2 public food market   3 administrative buildings   4 food expo   5 wholesale market   6 warehouse   P1 parking for trailers and trucks   P2 parking for private vehicles and vans   E1 entrance for private vehicles and vans E2 secondary entrance   E3 entrance for trailers and trucks
Three entrances are placed for controlled but conveniently accessible locations: North, West, and South. The South Entrance allows trailers and trucks to arrive from the highway. The West Entrance allows private vehicles to access the market, while the North entrance allows all vehicles to access.

Directly accessible from the city, the Northwest portion of the site allows for public access to the market. A public green park will be placed there to connect the multiple green spaces spread around the city. The access from Via del Turchino is extended, leading directly into the wholesale market. The market blocks are organized to maximize efficiency by taking advantage of the site. The linear blocks are organized according to the provided 72-module layout. The public market is modified to complete the layout of the market blocks to facilitate the overall circulation. Surrounding the market is the public green space where trees of local species are planted.

The administrative towers are located at the main entrance to announce the gateway, through which visitors arrive at the wholesale market. Each of the 5 towers are connected by a green terrace with views toward the city and the wholesale market complex.
