Conceptual Movie Poster: Moulin Rouge

San Diego City College Illustration Class:
Conceptual Movie Poster

This digitally illustrated conceptual poster was made for the 2001 Baz Luhrmann film Moulin Rouge for my Illustration class at San Diego City College.

The film is set in the 19th century Bohemian area of Montmartre in Paris, and is a musical love story about the penniless writer Christian and the courtesan Satine (who is promised to a Duke).  The story is reminiscent of Alexander Dumas' work Camille.  The words I included on the windmill are spoken throughout the movie as ideals of the bohemian revolution: Freedom, Truth, Beauty, and Love.

I combined the iconic red windmill (located at the real Moulin Rouge in Paris) with the image of Nicole Kidman's Satine character on the swing.  I created a vintage style flattened cartoon harkening back to the poster work of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and the art deco stylings of Erte.
