The Game of Murderers - Typeface

The Games of Murderers

A project given to us in University, the aim, to create a typeface to suit our chosen instance. I chose the Games of Murderers because it instantly came to mind after looking at the list. Horror is something that i enjoy and i liked the challenge of applying game into a typeface and mixing them together.

Mixing game and horror together was harder than i thought. Game typefaces tend to be big, bulky and almost child like. Where as horror typefaces are sharp, thin and jagged. So blending these together became difficult.
I decided to crack on with a horror typeface and then add the game in afterwards. I looked into maybe trying to decay the horror typeface using game, i tried normal game shapes, such as Pacman, snake (i looked into retro games for these) and then i came across tetris shapes. I found that this worked well and they suited each other well.
So here is my final typeface, i have included upper case, lower case, numbers and symbols.

I wanted to keep the advertisement for my typeface basic but still showed everything that the typeface needs. So again, i thought about games and horror. My instant reaction to horror was blood, i felt that blood would go well with the typeface and could be splatters in the background, keeping a lot of white space - a move that could ruin the image but one i feel works.

My problem then was adding in the game, i looked into gaming and came across the controllers - an item that it needed to all gamers. I thought that i could embed the controllers into the blood by using emboss tools and bevel tools, then to match it up with the typeface i inserted some tetris shapes with the same method as the controllers.

To finish it off, i embossed and beveled the typeface and changed the opacity so that the black didnt stand out too much.
