To the Death
In attempt to further my understanding of ink techniques and materials, I completed this 11x17 illustration which I have entitled “To the Death”. The requirements called for a central figure and a frame. I decided to depict a cat surrounded by peace lilies. While researching, I discovered that peace lilies are actually deadly to cats and they are often fatal when ingested. I took inspiration from my own cat, Gypsy, and her proclivity to play with the peace lily I have in my home. I have since taken precautions to kept it out of her reach, but found the idea behind the relationship interesting. She plays with something that will kill her yet she still seems unbothered by it. In my own way, I understand it because it is often the human experience to do the same with things and or people that are no good for us.

The piece was completed with an assortment of micron pens ranging from .5 to 8. Techniques incorporated include hatching and cross hatching, stippling, and scumbling. It is currently on display at the F. Jay Taylor Visual Arts Center in Ruston, LA.
