#challengeaccepted #chunauteesveekaarhai

When word about the femicide in Turkey started to do the social media rounds, women all over the world put up pictures of themselves on Instagram with a black and white filter with the #challengeaccepted. The sad thing was that most thought the challenge was to put up a black and white photo and tag a few other women and maybe say a few words on how strong those women are. In reality, so many women were being killed in Turkey that everyday in the newspapers, there would be black and white photographs of the women who died because of femicide. Putting up a black and white photograph meant that being a woman, had you been in Turkey, it very well might've been your photo in the newspaper one day.

Now that we know the real reason, what can we do about it? What action can we take?
First, I think we can acknowledge the fact that this problem exists in a humongous scale in my own country, India. And so, the action must start at home.

I just did a simple google search for NGOs working in India for women’s empowerment and being an illustrator, I wanted to create something that could raise funds for the cause.

I had never made an enamel pin or reached out to any vendors for making products prior to this so it was a really exciting venture to undertake. I did manage to sample it from two different places but the plan to sell the pins never went through because of various unfortunate reasons.

This is however a project that was close to my heart and I hope that in the future I can make more art for various causes but actually make it through to the finish line.
To make the illustration pin ready, I removed the shadows, petals and changed her expression to smile so that whenever we look at it, it makes us feel positive about change instead of like a victim. :)
Thank You!
