As an individual and as a young women, I admire strength in a person, the backbone of the soul, as well as elegance. Each, alone, holds a bold energy, but the blend of both together can be overwhelming in power yet captivating in beauty. A Backbone of Grace....

When I first began designing this piece, I wanted to use metal to depict the strength of the body, as it is bold in character. I chose to use yarn as my alternative material. The purpose was to have two extremes, copper contrasting with yarn, (hard v.s. soft), yet I didn't want either material to over power the other.

I wanted the wearer, (regardless of their own personal strength or grace), to feel empowered, bold with elegance and luminous, letting the brooch become a part of them.

By choosing a geometric design, I aimed for a seemingly uncomfortable mechanical construction for the backbone. When on the body, the brooch rests lightly against the back, adjusting the bodys posture and pronouncing the shoulders as the yarn flows against the gleam of the copper, brushing against the skin, adding the feeling and look of softness. Ultimatley, giving the wearer a strong captivating grace, without changing their appearance.
