The Health Benefits of Ice Skating

A social work student at Ryerson University, Teja Peltomaa attended high school at Appleby College, where she received the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. When she was younger, Teja Peltomaa competed in numerous figure-skating competitions, tying for first place in the 2013 Snowflake Skate competition and placing second in the 2011 Charles Dover Memorial Invitational.

Ice skating can provide a full-body workout and have numerous health benefits, including the following:

1. Improved balance and coordination. Because skating requires the engagement of multiple muscles for the skater to stay upright, skating helps improve balance. Additionally, shifting weight back and forth helps improve overall coordination.

2. Joint and muscle health. Working all of the body’s muscle groups and synchronizing leg movement can help keep joints limber and flexible. Particularly good for the abdominal and leg muscles, ice skating also improves cardiovascular health by increasing blood flow and heart rate.

3. Stress management. Any physical activity can have a positive impact on stress levels, and ice skating tends to be a particularly fun activity for many people. In an outdoor setting, skaters receive the additional stress-reducing benefits of fresh air and nature.

4. Endurance. Ice skating can burn 200 to 600 calories per hour. Working the leg muscles and raising the heart rate for an extended period can improve endurance for skating and other sports.
