Porcupine Tree - Progressive Rock Brand

This work is a tribute to one of the most influential progressive groups on the international music scene, the Porcupine Tree.

Originally, “Porcupine Tree” was a solo project by British musician and producer Steven Wilson.
Later it became a group, formed by Wilson (guitar and vocals), Richard Barbieri (keyboard), Colin Edwin (bass) and Gavin Harrison (drums) that in 2002 replaced the drummer Chris Maitland.

The band has been active in the prog-rock scene from 1987 to 2010.

Steven Wilson never specified the origin of the band's name, thus giving rise to several theories.

One of the most accredited theories is about the book "Metamagical Themas" by Douglas Hofstadter.
On page 409 there is an image of an infinite porcupine tree to teach what fractals are.

Steven Wilson is a programmer and may have been influenced by this book.
This project is inspired also by this theory.

The music band identity has always been represented by images with acid colors or sepia tones, reminding old fashioned photographs as well.

So, that's the reason why brand colours were sampled from covers of two albums: "Deadwing"(2005) and "Signify"(1996).
Both images include all the visual style of the Porcupine Tree.
However, the brightest shades has been chosen, giving the brand a more modern and digitally usable tone.

In fact, even the pictogram has a clean appearance compared to the rough and pointy lines of the logo used in the past by the band.

Here is an another version with the colors sampled from the cover of album "In Absentia" (2002).
Although color preferences have been given for the official visual communication of the brand, the logo design has been thought to match to all possible color combinations.

Porcupine Tree are an internationally renowned musical group and the progressive rock is very popular in countries like Russia and Japan.
For this reason it's decided to design a specific version for both the Russian and Japanese markets.
