This is a mockup for a redesign of Taco Bells website done for a project in school to practice information design and usability. Using user research, heuristic evaluation, analyzing information architecture, and performing usability testing I came to this final mockup result. For the Home page mockup I kept it primarily the same as tacobell.com. The only major difference I made with the home page is the navigation tab, which is also on every other mockup. I dramatically changed each name of every navigation tab and changed the amount of tabs from 5 to 3. What used to be the “Menu” tab has been changed to the “Carry-Out” tab and the “Delivery” tab has been changed to “Delivery with Grubhub” because our usability tests showed that users were unaware that “Menu” was for carry-out and “Delivery” was just a redirection to Grubhubs website. “Taco Merch” was changed to “Merchandise” to also prevent confusion because users didn’t immediately realize that tab was for clothing and whatnot. The “Gift Cards” tab and “Location” tab were removed because they could be relocated within other tabs.
On the Carry-Out page mockup I basically just merged the “Locations” page and “Menu” page because a user need both tabs to complete a carry-out order anyways. We decided on this when we did Assignment 3: Information Architecture Write-Up and the Site Map. When we originally made the site map we had a different map then the current site comps I have made but in hindsight after our usability test was done the “Locations” and “Menu” tabs would make more sense if they were in under 1 tab.
The Delivery with Grubhub page has not changed much at all. There is only 1 major difference, the name of the tab has been changed from “Delivery” to “Delivery with Grubhub.” This change has been made because our usability testing results showed that most users were unaware that this tab is used to see if Grubhub can deliver to the users location and then redirect the user to Grubhub’s site. I also changed the font color of the words “See if you're in Grubhub's delivery zone.” because of the background making it hard to see for smaller screens.
For Merchandise, the last mockup page I made major differences. This page's comp is supposed to represent the entire tacobelltacoshop.com being merged with tacobell.com. Starting at the top of the page the search bar that is usually used to search for food has changed to a merchandise search because we are now on the “Merchandise” tab. The title of this tab has also been changed as well from “Taco Merch” to “Merchandise.” This is because of our usability testing, for most users it took too long for them to realize that the “Taco Merch” tab was for merchandise like clothing and accessories. To merge the rest of the Merchandise page I put the main categories of items in large icons that would be clickable similar to how the Taco Shop has it. I made the “Collections” icon, “Clothing” icon, “Accessories” icon and “Gift Cards” icon. I excluded 2 of the main categories from this which were “Summer” and “Last Chance.” This is because “Summer” already exists under “Collections” on tacobelltacoshop.com currently based off of our heuristic evaluations so I don’t see much of a point of having this category twice. The “Last Chance” category only has 4 items available so it would be redundant to have a large icon like the others so instead it should be within the “Collections” icon. “Clothing” and “Accessories” appear the same on tacobelltacoshop.com but are now located only in one area since this merchandise page no longer shares the same navigation bar as the last. Finally, the “Gift Cards” icon is now the only place to get gift cards which better organizes the website like our site map.
