APWD was hired by a local writer to design a cost-effective alternative to a conventional contemporary modern desk.  A desk has a negative connotation: for example, "chained to the desk all day."  It was felt that a bench is more of what we were all talking about. A bench is not just a surface to work upon but rather a tool. It has to be functional, sturdy, minimal, custom, and most importantly inviting to use. All of these qualities are visual as well.
