Project 2: Monochromatic Illustration

For my project, I decided to draw a stylized portrait of Ramona Flowers based off my “Mail Delivery” sketch. This is one of my favorite scenes from the movie. Scott asks Ramona to hang out and she says, “If I say yes, will you sign for your dang package?” Haha!

I decided to use a color palette with shades, tones, and tints of pink. I chose pink because this is the hair color Ramona has when she is first introduced in the movie. For the background, I attempted to create a comic book style background. I used halftones and gradients to create texture. I referred to the videos you provided for the halftones and texture. I’m glad I did because I was almost going to draw each circle out by hand. Yikes! I found all the videos you provided very helpful. I really liked Tutvid’s tutorial because he provided free texture samples to download which I did use for parts of Ramona’s jacket and hair. I didn’t add too much texture to Ramona’s face because I felt like there was already so much going on with the background and her outfit.

This week I learned how to create a monochromatic illustration. This project made me realize how much texture and colors can affect the overall outcome of a design. I had a difficult time choosing colors for certain areas of Ramona’s jacket and it also took me a while to figure out what to do with the background. Overall, not my best work but I did enjoy this project.
