Conceptual Book Cover: Brave New World
As a project in my graphic design class at Brigham Young University - Idaho, I was tasked with creating a book cover for the popular book Brave New World. In this project I my professor ask me to make three different book covers. One of the covers was based on typography. One was based on physical elements found within the book. The final being what the designer wanted to make. In the order above: physical elements, designer's choice, and typography.
A large part of the book is the drug that their government uses to control the masses, Soma. I envisioned this as a type of drug that would be taken through an inhaler as there was I portion of the book that it was sprayed on the citizens to calm them down. You can see the representation of the drug on the first and last covers. The last cover also has a sort of "fog" which I envisioned to be the cloud of "soma" that the police used against a mob.
On the middle cover it has different Greek letters spelled out. This is the caste system that is set up within this book. I thought this was an important element to place on the cover as it is mentioned a fair amount and there is a lot of emphasis on their caste system. The citizens of their government are designed (within test tubes) to be within the caste that they are placed through conditioning. This conditioning process was mentioned throughout the whole book.
In the end, I feel like these covers accurately represent the novel Brave New World through their various elements.
