I love to celebrate and appreciate people who inspire me through art. I’m hoping to create more illustrations like this and I have a little appreciation project in the pipeline that I’m hoping to share next month so look out for that!

Francis of Assisi was an Italian Catholic friar who preached that the world was created good and beautiful by God but suffers in the hands of humans. He preached that the world is in need of saving and recovery because of human sin. This is so relevant for our time when we live in a world that humans are constantly destroying.

He believed that nature itself was the mirror of God and often referred to all creatures as his "brothers" and "sisters". I find this to be such a beautiful outlook.

There are many stories that say Francis of Assisi had a great love for animals and the environment. Legend and folklore say that birds would even fill nearby trees in his presence.

The message in his legacy shows us that when we are at peace with God (or you could otherwise say our higher selves, the universe, Mother Nature - however you prefer to connect to a higher power) we are better able to devote ourselves to building up that peace with all creation, which is inseparable from peace among all humans.

This is a beautiful message that is relevant to us all regardless of our opinions and thoughts about the existence of god and religion. We must look after our planet and show kindness and respect to all living things if we are also to respect one another.

Francis of Assisi was canonised as a saint on 26th July 1228, just two years after his death, by Pope Gregory IX. He is the patron saint of ecologists - honouring his love for animals and nature.
