There are a two things that Dutch people get excited about: discounts and ice on open water. As soon as reports of cold temperatures come in, "Elfstedentocht fever" is on the rise. After some nights of freezing, the first dare devils go on the thin ice to skate. Huge crowds soon follow. Admittedly, canals with ice make up for great photos, even without the skaters...
