The Be-Camps “Multifactory” is a campus functioning as a sustainable economic model formed around a creative community and its complete work cycle: from generating ideas to delivering products or services. So, the Multifactory is the place for working, conducting events, and networking.

Be-Camps is a platform which is filled as a co-working space with specific businesses, companies, creative teams and professionals of various profiles, who are open for collaboration, exchange of knowledge and education. At the same time, Be-Camps is an informal community, so an important role is played here by the spaces designed for leisure, for spending time with colleagues, friends, families and children, and for leading a pro-active and healthy lifestyle.

The campus plot is part of a former stone quarry, 3 km away from the City of Ollon. The new development has to meet the requirements of the industrial facility master-plan designed in 1994. At present, the northern part of the plot is to be adapted for a data centre and the southern one for the Be-Camps.

The Be-Camps’ programme consists of four components, including:

1. spaces for creative work and collaboration of companies and individuals
2. spaces for business events and recreation to promote networking
3. service spaces
4. spaces to practice a healthy lifestyle.

The Multifactory design should be flexible to adapt to changes in the programme and to reflect the open environment of the creative community bringing together the Be-Camps’ office and studio staff, as well as events participants and consumers of the services offered by the Multifactory.

Be-Camps comprises four mixed-function buildings. Three of them predominantly house offices, studios and storage space and the fourth is dominated by services. An important part is taken by public and common spaces intended for communication, leisure or alternative work spaces.

The ground floors can be used as storage space or as studios where large equipment can be installed. Consequently, the roads outlined in the master-plan are intended both for freight and passenger vehicles. The motorways curve around Be-Camps with public pedestrian space at its heart, which is further arranged as a square and a boulevard. Their front is formed by the main entrance zones of the buildings and by service functions.

Due to the fixed dimensions of the buildings in the master-plan, the project uses the 7.2-by-7.2 m modular grid, which meets the demands of the programme functions.

The grid served the basis to design the constructive scheme of CLT-panels with concrete nuclei containing vertical communications. The modularity and the CLT constructive solution meet the requirements of versatility and transformability of the spaces.

4-5 module-deep structures expressly suggested skylights and atria and large window openings.

The façade reveals the internal construction scheme which, together with additional elements, ensures solar protection and provides an opportunity for vertical gardening.

X-shaped CLT columns remind of the constructive principle of a traditional Swiss chalet. The Be-Camps’ constructive principle establishes its visual identity and its layouts promote re-enactment of its spatial scenarios. These principles set the corporate standard for the Be-Camps Multifactory should it to be upscaled to other locations.
