Romanian Historic Places: Prejmer Fortified Church

ROMANIAN HISTORIC PLACES:
PREJMER FORTIFIED CHURCH
The Transylvania region of Romania has a rich Medieval history, having been at the crossroad of several empires and wanted by all. Evidence of its past still stands in the form of many historic monuments.

The fortified church in Prejmer (Tartlau), Brașov County, is a Lutheran fortified church founded by the Germanic Teutonic Knights and was eventually taken over by the Transylvanian Saxon community. Initially Roman Catholic, it became Lutheran following the Reformation. Together with the surrounding village, the church forms part of the villages with fortified churches in Transylvania UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The church was built between 1211 and 1240, while the fortifications were added in the 15th and 16th centuries due to the numerous destructions of the surrounding village of Prejmer (more than 50 times). The church is surrounded by circular walls up to 5 m thick and nearly 12 m in height, as well as other defences. Within the church walls are over 270 rooms which could offer shelter to around 1600 villagers in case of attack.
