Movie Poster Redesign: Studio Ghibli
In this project I was given completely free reins within the realm of graphic design as a crescendo to my bachelor studies. I chose to redesign three of my favorite movies created by Studio Ghibli. The idea was to take use frames from key scenes in the movies and use these as a basis for the main illustrations on the posters by tracing appropriate line art on top of the frames by hand. To take this idea further, I colored and shaded these illustrations in the style of Ukiyo-e, which is another important cornerstone within the culture of arts. This style is very distinct that it pays little attention to realistic features. The shading and highlights are often contrasting with the other elements and are often done in the form of gradients. This creates a somewhat flat look to the illustrations while still maintaining a space of 3D space and scale. Each illustration also has a specific rice paper texture finish, which was commonly used for Ukiyo-e paintings during the height of its popularity.

The typeface used for the movie titles has central/western european features, and was chosen due to the fact that many movies produced by Studio Ghibli often contains architecture and other visual elements inspired by this area. The japanese titles of the movies are also included on the posters to pay further respect to the creators of these works.
