A good friend of mine gave me this skull as part of a barter. I'm not 100% certain on the animal of origin, but my money is on some type of small domestic dog, as it checks a lot of boxes. For Christmas, I decided to work on this skull and gift it to said friend. :D
Said friend is very interested in Set, so I took some small rib bones he had also given me and cut them to create something akin to the ears seen on illustrations of Set.
This was my first time grafting bone to bone in a skull project, and I used epoxy, because it's proven a formidable medium for the kind of sculpting I've been doing with skulls. I used the epoxy to secure the bony ridges to the skull and smoothed the edges so it better blended into the skull and looked like a natural growth.
I just had to do something about the exposed marrow!
So, I used more epoxy to fill out the shape. I also smoothed out the curve on the area between the eyes so it was a less dramatic slope to the snout. To me, it seemed to better emulate the imposing figure of Set.
Here's a close-up of the ridges.
Finally, it was time to paint! I chose my two-tone black paint with golden shimmer.
Once the base coat had dried, I added an ankh with a coppery paint. I love that you can barely see the transition between the bone and the epoxy on this one!
