HAKUFANA, a name derived from two Swahili words, Hakuna Kufanana meaning no looking the same is a collection whose concept is drawn from the philosophy of individualism which is understanding and embracing oneself and not conforming to the norm in terms of thinking, lifestyle and dressing. I used Shibori, a traditional Japanese dyeing technique to create unique abstract prints that are unpredictable in nature thereby every printed fabric is different. No two are alike, meaning no matter how accurate the method of dyeing, the fabrics will never be alike. I chose this angle to approach this concept to make a collection that is unique, different and stylish which will promote a sense of self identity in fashion. My motif is a Japanese symbol meaning individuality which be printed on the fabric through resist dyeing. Hakufana is a sustainable collection as I used cotton and linen and natural indigo dye. For the accessories I opted to use sisal which is also a sustainable material.
