Meet the Beelze-Bufi … or “BB”
Your cutest nightmare
Blending into the forest foliage with the help of its large pom-poms, it lures its victims by drawing mesmerising movements with its pincers - the tips of which resemble the beguiling dance of fireflies in the dead of night.

Good luck to you if you happen to be lured in while out camping, as the next thing you’ll see is the glint of those “fireflies” reflected in its numerous large eyes and the razor sharp teeth of its enormous grin.

After which you will be tickled to death.

Which is inaccurate really…as what seems like a “death tickle” to us is actually a disturbing mating dance “performed”, with its spiked-spider-legs, on top of its unfortunate victim...a demented display to its potential mating partners, (gathered in the shadows to watch the show), how creatively and horrifically they can dispose of their prey…

All this to the soundtrack of a maniacal laughter and screeching more disturbing than a badly tuned string-quartet.

MONSTERS! (or...Creature Design)

These were done while working on Netflix short series Blood Origin - A prequel to The Witcher.
I'm pretty sure none of these were used, and even if they were, what you'd have seen would be their skeletal remains in one sequence, not "alive" like this.

(And certainty not in this style...These are my b/w loose sketches with some colour washes added later on)

Often, the most fun designs seem to be for concepts that don't end up on screen. I hear this is a common thing.

I did a whole bunch of other VFX concepts and set extensions, a handful of which you can find in and through the PREVIOUS POST.

Meet the MalaCostraca family…
(that is an actual scientific nomenclature by the way…)

A real crabby crusty bunch these folks

Ideas and sources for reference can be found anywhere, but specially in what we may consider throw-away... and sometimes, when we simply look at such things from another angle…and WHAM! Insectoid alien while cleaning some seafood.

So I whipped up this motley crew while digesting its inspiration.

Meet The Buzzcock.

The only thing it has in common with the Mancunian punk band are the first eight letters of its name.

...but its roots (and beaks, legs and feathers) are actually Milanese...as the concept was inspired by the iconic Ellepi Klizia 97 stapler by Oscar Lepre.
