Painted Earth

This series of photographs depicts clay deposits naturally colored by iron oxide. The formations are in a constant state of erosion, revealing more color as time passes. The pastel colors embedded in these formations are unique, not unlike layers in a cake. The colors run after rainfall leaving streaks down the otherwise chalky white rock. I am enamored by the combination of texture and pastel color, as well as the strange beauty of this landscape.

These images were taken while testing the Phase One IQ4 150MP XT camera system, a modern field camera which boasts a high resolution 150 megapixel medium format sensor. This high resolution camera system is capable of capturing extensive levels of detail. Here, the varying textures and subtle details that would otherwise be lost are beautifully rendered, allowing these images to be printed to expansive sizes.
