Intro to 2D Digital Imaging
For this project we each chose an artist, designer, musician or any other iconic cultural figure that we appreciated. I decided to do Tyler the Creator a musical artist because I’m a big fan of the music he creates as well the person he is. Using the image as a reference, we created a portrait by reducing subtle color and tonal shifts of a photograph into an illustrative image. This was a great introduction to how useful the pen tool is. Successful images showed dimensional form, light shadow and expressive color. To make sure the illustration was reductive we had to use a reductive color palette as well, where we were limited to 6 colors. I decided to go with a complementary color scheme because it fit best with my composition. With the limited color scheme I had to be strategic about where I placed my colors. Having his hat and sweatshirt be a different color from his face really helped the viewer understand what was going on instead of it all blending together. Because of the color scheme, subject matter, and stylization I’m very pleased with how this piece turned out.
