Baltasar grows an arm
This work was the result of collaboration of ISR's VisLab (Institute of Systems and Robotics Vision Lab - Technical University of Lisbon) with Miguel Praca (Research Assistant) and Ricardo Beira (ME graduate student).
Baltasar had two eyes (cameras) and a neck with a total of 5 degrees of freedom. It was able to recognize objects in motion. For the project Mirror he had to be able to copy the action of an object being manipulated by a human counterpart.
A torso was built, the head redesigned, and a new arm and hand were developed. The design was simple but followed anthropomorphic requirements so that what was observed could be emulated in a recognizable way.
It took 6 months for the prototype to start executing tests, with subsequent refinements over the next 6 months.
As a result of the success in this project a new 5-year research grant was won, which led to higher challenges and successes.
Pleased to meet you. Hope you get my name!
If you need a hand... remember me.
This is what it looks like, a first generation android...
