Pomo VR: Concept art, Storyboarding and Animatic

Creating Concept Art for the Pomo VR game

When it comes to creating concept art for games, illustrations or animations I always make sure to first research for similar games or animations, thus getting some inspiration to start building a final moodboard and concepts to follow in our project.

Below you can see some of the games, animations and artists that inspired us in our Pomo project:
Once we have all come to an agreement in how we wanted our game to look and feel I was able to create a final Moodboard with the main imagery and details we wanted to see in our game.
Initial character concepts and studies

Once we finally had the moodboard to use as primary source of inspiration for our project, I started working on character concepts for our game.
You can see some of the early concepts below:
Main Character concepts
After trying out different  character concepts we finally decided on our two final character designs for Pomo and Stromo which will be the characters we will controls ingame.
Below you can see some main character concepts, potential power ups and expressions and even size comparison to the real world of our two main characters.

The main characteristics of our characters are as follows:

- Both characters are small magical forest sprites,
- Pomo is the Fearless character but he is also the weakest in strength, however, he is fast, nimble, can glide and can emit light when needed,
- Stromo is the strongest of the two sprites and can carry and push heavy objects, however, he is quite slow at moving besides being shy and scared of a lot of things, so he needs Pomo to assist him in scary situations.

I also designed some  Ingame Assets we would want to see in the game environment as you can see below:

Game Level Game Design Concepts

Once I finalized the main characters designs I moved onto creating the magical world in which we would get to play our characters.

Below you can see all the different Level designs we would have ingame.
LEVEL ONE
TUNNEL CONNECTING FROM LEVEL ONE TO TWO (never used)
LEVEL TWO: The Cave
LEVEL THREE: The End (fast concept art)
Creating an Animatic to showcase how the game would work

In order to test and explain how our game would work, I created a storyboard to showcase the gameplay using Procreate and I converted the storyboard into an animatic that you can see below:
