Cultural Assimilation

The series of images uses florals and fragmentation to convey the idea of cultural assimilation and particular the generational loss of the Chinese heritage in my own family. The question I proposed “How can we explore the loss of cultural heritage throughout the generations and the inevitable process of cultural assimilation?” prompted my image- making. I decided to use portraits of my grandma, mother and myself to display three generations of my own family. I focused on the use of florals to communicate my concept of cultural assimilation as it creates a link to country. I used the native flowers from each of our birth countries. Therefore I used the native flowers from Hong Kong, Papua New Guinea and Australia. The blossoming of the native flowers out of the fragments in the portraits symbolise the feeling of needing to conform to the social norms of society. I included the family images sunken into our chest to symbolise that no matter the country we live in there is always a part of us that is connected to our heritage.
