EMERGE Studio, the team led by Elizabeth Graff (UI) and Wolfram Hoefer (RU), formed as a merging of disciplinary expertise to realize responsible design and technical innovation desired for the exhibit in NYC. Made up of educators, scientists, designers and students, EMERGE Studio creates a model for working in the realm of the built environment in the 21st century with collaboration and environmental stewardship at the fore. Following William McDonough's Cradle-to-Cradle dictum as taught in the university classroom, EMERGE oversaw site selection, worked with the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, Central Park Conservancy, and other public and private stakeholders in evaluating the ideal location in NYC for the United States debut of this critical exhibition.

The layout is intended for the photographic panels to open toward the builings with the silk panels oriented toward the water. the space between the photographic panel and the earth facts provides breathing room, visual definition, and allows for primary viewing of the photograph from all vantage points.

Inspiration Center "Pod" Mock-Up
The ‘IC-Pod’ solution for the inspiration center looks towards the same developmental principles of the ‘box’ by incorporating compartmentalization, collapsobility and modularity. The bookstore (shown at right) is a representation of one of the three modules to be constructed. With the same basic outter shell and an open floor plan there is a specific focus on functionality and adaptability. The contents can be shifted, walls can be moved and outer panels can be alternated, all for the sake of offering a template that can be site responsive as the exhibit travels.

The ‘IC-Theatre’ pre-lim was designed under the premise of there needing to be a architectural feature that was both visually compelling and functionally practical. It’s designed in the manner of the natural process of an opening lotus, with petals that are responsive to the suns position in the sky. When the sun is highest the petals unfurl to their widest breadth to shade the stage and patrons seated beneath its canopy. And when the sun is set, the petals close upright like a beacon, illuminated in brilliant moonlight, as a guiding visage for the nightime viewers of the exhibition.
