 1. Headwear Project - Soft goods Studio Fall 2020
Concept - High Fashion Anonymity

This hat is for someone who wants more anonymity in our new masked society while making a statement. This person wants to be noticed while not being identified. Combining a classic design like the pillbox hat, first popular in the 30s, became prevalent in the 50s and 60s, with a formal face covering. There are two different veils, one a fine metallic mesh and one resembling an artificial chainmail material, giving the piece a high fashion, almost medieval aesthetic while completely blurring out your face. This hat is for someone who acquires unique articles for their wardrobe and felt they needed something more to be noticed while donning an N-95 underneath. This piece does not act as a required face mask during the pandemic, instead a statement piece to accentuate our new society’s anonymity.
Exploratory Sketches -
I explore ways to attach mesh veils for different opacity levels through multiple fabric layers in the sketches above. I also studied various headwear pieces to act as a base for the veils.
Inspiration Board -
Hat Studies -
I used felt to draft up a pillbox hat inspired piece for the veils to be attached. Woman's fashion trends inspire this in the '50s and '60s. The top pattern gave the hat a more constructed look as the traditional pillbox hat had only a plain flat top.
Veil Studies -
I experimented with the veils' placement, considering how they would fold over the head when flipped back and how they would drape over the facial features.
Materials -
For the final piece, I used felt, which held the pillbox hat inspired shape well, and for the veils, I used thick chainmail like mesh along with a fine metallic mesh.
