My Inspiration was from the book creating with shapes by Usha Doshi, a member of COS design studio since 2007, this book explores the possibility of creating garments using seven basic shapes – square, rectangle, triangle, diamond, circle, oval, and octagon. According to Doshi, the conception of the method and techniques happened accidentally, as she observed her granddaughters experimenting with fabric cut-outs. She joined in, and soon discovered that these shapes could be used to form intricate folds, drapes, and pleats, without using excessive fabric or complex darts and seams. With clearly drawn diagrams and beautiful photography, the book is intended to inspire creativity across all disciplines.

For this particular project of a classic white shirt transformation/upcycle I wanted to blur the lines between traditional and modern. A classic white shirt carefully crafted as a tailored blouse with an asymmetric buttoned V-neck front. Clean silhouette, functionality with a well fitted back with extra fabric that is adjustable according to your comfort. Which means as time goes by instead of buying another shirt you could remove the stitches at the center back of the blouse and it expands a couple of inches. The extra fabric cut off from the shirt is used to create puffy sleeves to give a feminine and bold feel to the whole outfit.”
