Backyard Botanicals

Spring was emerging just as the stay-at-home orders were rolling out and I became so grateful for the bursts of color that were exploding out of the gray-brown winter gloom. Watching the wildflowers and perennials cycle through with the seasons has been a real joy and this series serves as a visual gratitude journal of sorts.
Celandine Poppy - one of the earliest flowers to appear each spring, carpeting our woods in yellow.
Prairie Trillium - I love its speckled leaves and the deep magenta of its petals.
Great White Trillium - the second of two types of trillium that grow in our woods. I love its pristine white ruffled petals.
Lily of the Valley
Peony - we have a row of these showstoppers next to our driveway. They're my absolute favorites. They often bloom around my birthday so I feel a special connection to them.
Daffodil - they remind me to persevere through the false springs and second and third winters of March. If they can survive a late spring snowfall, so can I.
Dwarf iris - always the first to bloom despite what March throws at them.
Black-eyed Susan
Tall poppy, allowed to thrive.
Wild bergamot
