For my term 3 project at Open Window, I had to illustrate a children's book. The story is an African folktale which has been reimagined by a South African author, and the setting needed to be uniquely South African. The author preferred a more rural feeling to the setting.
This project had a competitive aspect. If any of us chose a story supplied by Jacana Media, they would work with the winner of their competition as well as the author of the story to get the book published and then distributed through David Krut Bookstores.
I aimed to create characters and environments which were vibrant and appealing to both adults and children alike. Here are some of my favourite illustrations and spreads.
